San Ysidro School District Earns Upgraded Bond Rating
SAN YSIDRO – After demonstrating continued improvement of its finances, including rebuilding its reserves and presenting a balanced budget, San Ysidro School District has earned an upgraded bond rating, from BBB- to an A-.
The rating from national credit rating agency Fitch Ratings gives investors a strong indication of the District’s financial stability and its capacity to meet debt obligations. San Ysidro School District taxpayers approved the $250 million Proposition C in 1997, providing the District funding to make capital improvements to its schools.
“Our District has worked hard to restore the District’s financial footing so we can focus on what matters most – providing the highest quality education possible for our children,” SYSD Superintendent Dr. Julio Fonseca said. “We have a diligent team and Board of Education that continues to keep the District’s budget on track and ensure we are making smart decisions in the short-term and long-term.”
San Diego County recently approved the District’s Second Interim Positive certification for the 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 fiscal years. The certification demonstrates San Ysidro will meet its financial obligations this year and in the next two years.
The District projects a budget surplus operation for its 2016 fiscal year and has restored cash and reserve balances to healthy levels in a sharp turnaround from the fiscal distress of prior years.
“Every decision we make is rooted in what is best for our students,” said Board of Education President Marcos A. Diaz said. “It hasn’t been easy, but we’re proud that we can continue to build on this strong foundation to ultimately prepare students to be successful after they leave our schools.”
The District’s operations have continued to strengthen with increased state funding, as well as sound decision-making and diligence in earning the trust of its community.
